How the check works

The checker runs the same engine as the remover, entirely in your browser: it scans the document structure for objects linked to gamma.app — the Gamma watermark image and its hyperlink in PDFs, the hyperlinked shape on the slide master in PPTX files. Nothing is uploaded; you can go offline after the page loads.

If watermark objects are found, the cleaned copy is already prepared in memory — downloading it is the removal. If the Gamma watermark was flattened into the page image, the report says so honestly instead of pretending it can be removed.

What the Gamma watermark checker report actually tells you

Five rows: file type, file size, units scanned, whether a Gamma watermark was detected and how many objects, and whether any of it is flattened. If objects were found, a download button for the cleaned file appears with them.

Units scanned is the number that catches mistakes

For a PDF this is the page count, because the Gamma watermark is repeated once per page rather than stamped at document level. For a PPTX it is the number of slide masters and layouts examined, which is why it never matches your slide count — the badge lives on the templates the slides inherit from. If the PDF number is lower than your page count, you opened a different file than you meant to.

A detected Gamma watermark means objects, not pixels

The row reads "Yes" followed by a count, and that count is how many discrete objects carry the gamma.app or gamma.to link. A PDF at 40 pages typically reports 40. Zero here does not mean your file is clean to the eye; it means nothing in the file structure is linked to Gamma, which is a different claim and the next row explains why that matters.

Flattened risk is the row that decides everything

When this reads "Yes", part of the Gamma watermark has been merged into a page image and no object exists to delete. That is a structural dead end, not a bug, and it is the single most useful thing the checker tells you — because it tells you before you download, not after you have shared a file that still shows the badge.

How the check decides something is a Gamma watermark

One rule leads: an object counts only if its hyperlink or link annotation resolves to gamma.app or gamma.to. Position and shape names only raise confidence; they never trigger a match on their own.

It never matches the words "Made with"

Matching that phrase would be the obvious shortcut and it is deliberately forbidden, because a slide reading "Made with love" is legitimate user content and would be destroyed by it. Every claim the report makes traces back to a link target, which is why the checker gives a different answer than your eyes do on a flattened file.

Corner position is a confidence boost, never a trigger

A candidate must sit past 70% of the page on both axes to earn the position boost, and on real free-tier exports the badge lands near 85% across and 92% down. On its own this proves nothing — plenty of legitimate content sits in the bottom-right corner, which is exactly why position cannot be allowed to decide.

A size guard protects your background images

In a PDF a candidate image is only considered when it is at most 45% of the page width and 25% of its height. Without that guard, a full-bleed background photo anchored in the corner would qualify. Coordinates are computed by tracking the graphics transformation matrix, so rotated or scaled pages are judged on where the image really lands.

Reading the four Gamma watermark outcomes and what to do with each

A Gamma watermark that is detected and not flattened comes out cleanly. Detected and flattened means partial. Not detected means there is nothing linked to Gamma in the file. A rejected file means the format is unsupported.

Gamma watermark detected, not flattened — take the download

This is the ordinary case for a standard Gamma export. The cleaned file offered next to the report is the real output of the same engine the remover uses, so there is no second step and no second upload. Text stays selectable, fonts and layout are untouched, and the file only shrinks by the size of the objects removed.

Detected but flattened — re-export as .pptx first

Some of the branding is baked into a page raster. Go back to Gamma and export as .pptx instead of PDF: in a PPTX the badge is a shape on the slide master and is almost always removable. Cleaning that file and, if you need a PDF, exporting the cleaned deck afterwards gets you a genuinely clean document.

Not detected — check which file you opened

Either the file came from a paid Gamma plan and never carried a badge, or it was not made in Gamma, or it has already been cleaned. If you can still see a mark on screen while the report says zero, it is flattened pixels and the flattened-risk row will say so. Running the remover on it would change nothing.

When checking for the Gamma watermark first is worth the extra step

Mostly when the answer changes what you do next: triaging a batch of exports, deciding whether to re-export from Gamma, or confirming a file is clean before it leaves your hands.

Triaging a folder of old exports

If you have a dozen decks from different months, the flattened ones cannot be fixed and the rest can. Checking tells you which is which in seconds each, so you only spend re-export effort on the files that need it rather than discovering the problem one deck at a time.

Confirming the Gamma watermark is gone before something goes out

A Gamma watermark is not only a picture, it is a live hyperlink. Covering it with a white rectangle in a PDF editor leaves the clickable region alive underneath. Running the check on the final file is the fastest way to prove the link is actually gone rather than merely hidden.

Deciding whether a paid plan would help

Upgrading Gamma removes the badge from future exports only; it does nothing to the files already on your disk. If the check says your existing exports are all detected and not flattened, you do not need the plan to clean them — and if they are flattened, the plan will not fix those either, only a fresh export will.

What the Gamma watermark checker does with your file

It reads and rewrites the file inside your own browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is logged, and your original on disk is never modified — the cleaned copy is a separate download you choose to take.

No server means nothing to retain

There is no backend receiving files, so retention windows, deletion requests and breach response do not apply — there was never a copy on our side. You can verify it directly: load the page fully, switch the device to airplane mode, then run a check. It still works, because the engine is already in the tab.

The first file is slower than the rest

The first check downloads a WebAssembly Python runtime plus pypdf and python-pptx, tens of megabytes in total. The browser caches them afterwards, so subsequent checks take a couple of seconds. On a network that blocks the CDN this first step is where it fails; try another connection.

Supported formats and the size ceiling

PDF and PPTX, the two formats Gamma exports, up to 500 MB. The ceiling exists because the whole document is held in your tab memory while it is rewritten rather than being sent away. Legacy .ppt files are not archive-based and are rejected; re-save as .pptx and check again.
